Ramalodium succulentum Nyl. ex Crombie

  Thallus membranous to fruticose, at least 2.5 cm wide, grey-violet. Lobes 3–5 (–10) mm long, 0.5–2 mm wide, cylindrical or flattened, canaliculate at base; surface wrinkled. Hyphae 1–2 (–4) mm wide. Amorphous deposits within thallus. Nostoc cells violet. Apothecia to 1 mm wide, dark red-brown; hymenium 100–110 µm thick; subhymenium 90–350 µm thick; proper exciple 100–225 µm thick, strongly gelatinised, with cell lumina narrow. Asci 70–80 × 13–13.5 µm, with 8 spores in 1 or 2 rows. Ascospores ellipsoidal, 10–11 × 7.5–8 µm.
     
  Known only from the type locality, W of Sydney, N.S.W., (but not from the Blue Mtns as stated by R.Filson, Index to type specimens of Australian lichens: 1800–1984. Austral. Flora and Fauna Series 4: 261 (1986) since Brown did not collect that far west). The specimen from Cradle Mtn, Tas., which has been distributed as Ramalodium succulentum in the Lichenes exsiccati of the University of Colorado Museum no. 452 is Wawea fruticulosa, see A.Henssen & G.Kantvilas, Wawea fruticulosa, a new genus and species from the southern hemisphere, Lichenologist 17: 85–97 (1985).
